This historic 18th Century house and estate has invested in biomass to secure its future.

The National Trust invested in biomass heating to ensure the longevity of Nostell Priory for years to come.

The historic building, on the original site of a priory and some 300 acres of land, attracts visitors throughout the year for its collection of Chippendale furniture, landscaped gardens and paintings by Brueghel, Hogarth and Kauffmann.

This £2.3M project included the full refurbishment of the Grade I listed riding school and stable block.

Rural Energy installed a 300kW Herz BioMatic wood pellet boiler in a customised packaged solution energy centre. This includes a green container with plant room, and a specially built v-profile fuel store for the wood pellet fuel.

A wood pellet solution was chosen as the installation was part of the stable block refurbishment. With limited access around the block for a delivery vehicle, plus the requirement for a containerised solution, the pellet option best suited the site’s needs. This also means that fuel deliveries cause less disruption at a time when there may be visitors and numerous staff on site.

Since it came into operation in 2010, the Herz boiler has been heating the Riding School, Stable Block and main house, including a cafe, visitor centre and shop.
