Rural Energy secures biomass deal for Bernard Matthews

Rural Energy secures biomass deal for Bernard Matthews
We have signed a deal worth over £4 million to supply Bernard Matthews with biomass boiler solutions in the largest single UK biomass roll-out to date.

Following over a year of planning, this deal will see our innovative Herz biomass technology installed in 21 turkey farms across East Anglia and the East Midlands, the largest of which has 21 poultry sheds.

Buckinghamshire-based Lumicity, a renewable energy firm originally set up by Irish electricity company ESB, created a syndicate to bid for the work involved in this huge roll-out of 179 boilers in all. PPS, Baxi Commercial and Armstrong are providing the packaged plant rooms into which the biomass boilers will be installed that are being supplied and commissioned by Rural Energy.

We have already begun to train Baxi’s and Armstrong’s engineers on the installation of our Herz Firematic systems. The solution for the poultry farms, consisting of eight or nine sheds on average, is for 150kW and 199kW boilers in varying numbers to meet the output required for each individual site.

The technical team at Rural Energy created a set of detailed designs for each of the sites’ requirements. Bespoke packaged plant rooms will be built off-site and have the biomass boilers installed into them. Once complete, these pre-fabricated solutions will be delivered to the farms as required and connected to the heating systems for the sheds.

This is the largest roll-out of biomass in a single project ever seen in the UK and underlines the increasing demand for clean, on-site heat generation in the poultry sector. The turkey rearing sites operated by Bernard Matthews that will benefit from reduced fuel costs, the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payment scheme and lower carbon emissions are situated in Lincolnshire, Suffolk and Norfolk.

The first of the biomass packaged plant rooms are on schedule to be commissioned by the end of April with the entire range installed and completed in October this year.

Rural Energy is extremely proud to add this exciting venture to our credentials.
