Waterperry Gardens Estate, Nurseries and Garden Centre

The plant room at Waterperry Gardens
Waterperry Gardens is home to a large plant growing business, garden centre and gardens. Running courses, events and opening the gardens to the public, the Gardens welcome a host of visitors to their visitor centre every year. It is as much as public attraction as it is a nursery and gardening business.

The owners needed to reduce the cost of heating for this off gas site. Construction specialists WG Carter were consulted to investigate the requirement for biomass district heating. Large heat loads for the numerous buildings on site as well as the nursery glasshouses meant that biomass was the most cost-effective route for this business.

Rural Energy was consulted on the suitability and requirements of a newly constructed plant room and fuel store building and contracted to implement a biomass system. We advised on the
construction of a suitable energy centre to comfortably fit all required equipment.

Our Technical Design team developed a scraper floor fuel feed system that could provide wood chip fuel to a 500kW Endress USF-W (an industrial quality boiler). This boiler would provide heating with hot water that could be used for disinfecting used parts of the glasshouses.

This is now one of our most well known projects, and we have held several visitor days for the public to see biomass at work. The boiler was installed and commissioned in 2010 so is now in its fifth year of operation. Throughout this time, Rural Energy’s Service & Maintenance team has overseen the operation of the system through a service contract and annual visits.
