Milnes High School is a 1980s high school set in beautiful countryside, just a stone’s throw from Spey Bay on the Scottish coastline.

The remote location lends itself to two situations: serving 500 students in the local area, and a good supply of local wood fuel. As part of moves to improve the school’s infrastructure, Moray Council chose to invest in biomass heating and hot water.

On behalf of the Council, consultants NIFES Group approached Rural Energy direct to advise on boiler selection requirements. After this process the project was put out to tender and Rural Energy won with their specification. Rural Energy specified for an 800kW Herz BioFire to be installed into a purpose built energy centre with an octagonal fuel store.

Due to the busy nature of a school day it was important for the school to be able to get on with daily life once the biomass installation was commissioned and heating the campus.

Therefore Rural Energy recommended wood pellet fuel to allow for fuss-free delivery. As such a large silo was required in order to meet demand, so an octagonal store with a fill pipe suitable for blown deliveries was recommended. The wood pellet solution means that on a site that is busy and has limited space for a large delivery vehicle, the pellets can be blown from up to 20m away.

The biomass boiler was installed into a purpose built energy centre designed and constructed by Sparks Mechanical Services and retrofit into the existing buildings. The octagonal fuel store stands independently adjacent to the energy centre.

The Herz boiler was commissioned in 2013 and now feeds heat and hot water to the school throughout its first heating season.
